In this photo we placed the light source with no diffusion on the left side of the subject but close to him in order to achieve the hard shadow; then I photographed his shadow.
In this photo we placed the light source behind a piece of vellum for diffusion to achieve softer light on the subject, but remaining on the left side and slightly further away from the subject. Then using a mirror to reflect light onto the right side of his face in order to minimize shadows cast on the subject.
